Most Frequently Asked Questions About Choosing a Sportsbook

We get a lot of questions about how to choose the right sportsbooks. So we thought it would be a good idea to post those questions here, along with our answers, so that maybe everyone could benefit from.

How Do I Choose a Sportsbook?

There isn’t general advice for how to choose a sportsbook. In other words, a sportsbook that will work for me, might not work for you, and vice versa. There are things to think about when shopping around, though:

  • Are you in the US? Does the sportsbook accept American bettors? Does the sportsbook accept bettors from your state?
  • Some sportsbooks cap how much you can bet. Does the sportsbook you’re considering allow you to bet as much as you want?
  • Do you want to bet on your tablet or smartphone? You’ll want to check that the sportsbook has a mobile version of their website, or an app that you can download.
  • Does the sportsbook have a deposit option you can use? Are there fees for using it?

These points are in addition to general (important) factors like making sure the sportsbook is licensed, regulated and safe for bettors. You’ll want to make sure that they pay their players too.

What is a Deposit/Welcome/New Depositor Bonus?

Deposit bonuses are promotions that sportsbooks offer first time depositors. They offer these bonuses to encourage you to make your first deposit after creating an account.

An example of a deposit bonus would be something like, 100% match up to $500 or 300% up to $600. The casino matches a percentage of every dollar you deposit. Deposit bonuses are (usually) one time things, so you want to deposit as much money as you can.

One thing to be aware of is whether or not the deposit bonus is a cash or free play bonus. A cash bonus can be withdrawn (once you clear it) and a free play bonus cannot. With a free play bonus you can only withdraw any money you won with it.

How Do Clearing Requirements Work?

Bonuses aren’t entirely free. If they were then sportsbooks and casinos would quickly go out of business. So, deposit bonuses will come with clearing requirements.

A clearing requirement will be something like you wagering your deposit, or deposit plus bonus, so many times before you can request a withdrawal. For example, a wagering requirement might be 10x your deposit plus bonus. So if the combined total of your deposit plus bonus was $1,000, you’d have to wager this 10 times ($10,000) before you can withdraw your winnings.

If you don’t follow through on the clearing requirements then you run the risk of losing your bonus money, as well as any money you won with it.

Are US Players Able to Bet Online?

Many sportsbooks still accept bets from Americans. The real challenge is if you live in a state that is known for having harsh laws, such as Kentucky, Washington State, Maryland and New York. These states are often prohibited from signing up.

We try to cover these details in our reviews. However, if you don’t find them there, then you can contact the support staff at the sportsbook you’re considering. Most sportsbooks also remove the states they don’t allow from their dropdown menu on their sign-up form. If you don’t see your state (or country), then you can assume that you’re not allowed to place bets there.

Can I Make Bets on My Mac/Linux/Tablet/Phone?

Yes. Most sportsbooks don’t use download software, so you don’t have to worry about finding a sportsbook that is compatible with your Mac or Linux operating software.

Most sportsbooks are mobile friendly, too. They’ll either have a mobile version of their site or an app that you can download.

What Types of Bets Can I Make?

In addition to college football, you can place bets on pro football, basketball, hockey, baseball, soccer and fighting. Each main category will also have sub-categories that will contain countries, college sports and various leagues/tours. There are seasonal events too, such as the Olympics.

Many sportsbooks offer live betting, too, as well as odds on political events and TV shows.

How Do I Make a Deposit?

Making a deposit is straightforward. It’s like making a purchase online.

The most important thing to do is make sure the sportsbook has a deposit option you can use. In other words, if you have a Visa debit/credit card you’ll want to make sure to find a sportsbook that accepts that type of payment. The options available to you will depend on the sportsbook and where you live.

Many sportsbooks have fees on their deposit/withdrawal options too. So you might want to shop around to find the best deal, or to find a sportsbook that offers fee-free options. Sometimes to get fee-free banking you’ll need to be a VIP member and/or deposit/withdrawal enough money at one time.
