Types of College Football Bets

One of the first things you should learn about betting on college football are the types of bets that you can make. Each bet will be different in terms of how you win or lose, odds and how they’ll affect your bankroll. So if you want to win, and most people do, you’ll take the time to go through the list below. Check out all these college football bets and a whole lot more below.

Bets You Can Make On College Football

Here are the bets that you can make in college football.

Point Spread Betting

The point spread is the most common type of bet to make.

You’ll recognize a point spread by one team having a negative number of points in front of it, and the other having positive points in front of it. The team with the negative points is the favorite and the team with the positive points is the underdog.

In order to win your bet, the favorites will need to win by more point than they’re given, or in the case of the underdogs, lose by less points. For example:

  • If the favorite is -1.5 to win, then they’ll need to win by 2 points or more for you to win your bet.
  • If the underdog is +1.5 to lose, then they’ll need to lose by 1 or fewer points for you to win your bet.

Money Line

The money line is the easiest bet to understand. Here’s how it works:

Say you have the favorite team at -150 and the underdogs at +150. If you choose to bet on the favorites, you’ll spend $150 to try to win $100. On the other hand, if you choose to bet on the underdogs, you’ll be betting $100 to win $150.

It’ll be like this in all cases, although the actual odds may be different. But you’ll always spend more to win less for the favored teams, and less to win more for the underdogs.

Over/Under

Over/unders are simple – the bookie will come up with a number, and you decide whether or not you think the combined points in the game (by both teams) will be over or under that number.

For example, if the over/under is 35 points and you bet on the over, then you’ll win if both teams score a combined total of 36 or more points. You’ll lose if it’s 35 or under.

Prop Betting

A prop bet is a wager on any outcome other than the spread, money line or total. Here are some common prop bets:

  • What team will score first.
  • Which quarterback will have the most passing yards.
  • Who will have the most rushing yards.

Prop bets can be fun and/or unique too. For example:

  • Who will win the coin flip.
  • What will be the best super bowl commercial.
  • Length of the National Anthem.

Teaser

Teaser bets are modified parlays. Like parlays, there are multiple bets that can be made within a teaser. In other words, you can bet on the spread and the over/under. In order to win, you have to win both bets.

The teaser is an additional number added or taken away from your bets.

For example, say you have a spread of 5 points and an over/under of 35 points. If you take an 8 point teaser, your spread is now +13 points and your over/under is 43. So in order to win, you now have to beat the spread by 13.5 points or more and the over/under by 44 points or more.

Parlays

Parlay bets are wagers made on 2 or more teams on the same bet. In order to win the bet you must win both games.

These types of bets are very tempting because you can win a lot of money on a small wager (odds of xxx:x). However, they’re a long shot and are usually not +EV bets, and get worse with the more teams that you add.
